Freshman Composition - Large-Scale Assessment

The placement level for incoming freshman is determined using a combination of SAT Verbal scores, limited response sentence scores, reading comprehension scores (both derived from the NJBSPT), and holistically-scored essays in order to place students. The placement guidelines provide a consistent measurement for large-scale assessment.

Once students are placed, they are evaluated by their instructors. The curriculum, however, is assessed through the use of holistically-scored best papers and analytically scored portfolios on a semester basis. The assessment of freshman composition is in order to improve curriculum, help students, and establish outcomes.
