English as a Second Language (ESL) - Large Scale Assessment

ESL Freshman Composition parallels Freshman Composition and is a key component in large scale assessment. Assessment and placement scores have shown that the emphasis of the ESL course should be placed more on writing than on speaking.

Writing based individual assessments are performed 4-5 times during the semester. These 50 minute essays provide the students with an opportunity to practice developing their ideas
and writing with more depth. Typically classroom instruction consists of writing assignments where personalized help can be provided. Findings also show that ESL students have less grammar related issues than in the past.
